Belize Bank International Team wins 4th Eco-challenge

As Belize Bank International Limited continues to build sustainable relationships within the community, we have sponsored our earliest championship team “Spartans”, for this year’s 4th annual Ambergris Caye Lagoon-Reef Eco-Challenge.

The Eco-challenge is a two-day canoe race, which starts at the Lagoon side of the island, intervals for an overnight camp at the midsection of the Island’s perimeter, and proceeds around to the finishing point at the inner front of the reef.  The object of this yearly event is to awaken the importance of aqua-ecology and its environmental appreciation, while at the same time, promoting healthy recreation between athletic competitors.

The Belize Bank “Spartans” competed against 28 other teams and has exceptionally achieved the title of first place in the professional category for the past two consecutive years. This 2008 challenge proved to be a bigger success than last year and was well received by the community. Proceeds from the race are geared towards the development of Ambergris Caye, a chief tourist destination underling the country’s economic growth.

Prior to the Eco-Challenge, the Belize Bank team also played second in this year’s Ruta Maya race, being the longest canoe race.  Up next for the Belize Bank is the Texas Safari, a 260-mile canoe race along the Colorado River to the Golf of Mexico.  Both Amado Cruz and Armin Lopez of Belize Bank make up part of the team that won that race last year.  They are clearly top competitors in this type of race.
